Sexuality & Persons with IDD

Each session is credited for 1 hour of CEU for social work, DODD – SSA, IA, and Superintendent Hours

Part 1 – Monday, Oct 25 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
Sex-Ability: Supporting the Development of Healthy Sexual Expression in Persons with Intellectual Disability

Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify historical concerns around withholding sex education from persons with IDD.
2. Participants will increase their understanding of normative sexual development vs. areas of concerning sexual behavior.
3. Participants will gain understanding of how early childhood experiences may impact the development of healthy relationships in adulthood.

 

Part 2 – Monday, November 1 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
When Sexual Interest and Curiosity Become Concerning

Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify areas of potential involvement of law enforcement.
2. Participants will increase their understanding on informed consent as it relates to sexual relationships.
3. Participants will gain an understanding of how early childhood experiences may impact the development of fetish behavior.

 

Part 3 –  Monday, November 8 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
Bringing it home: Creating environments for people to connect and thrive.

Objectives:
1. Participants will be introduced to guidelines around relationship development in the workplace.
2. Participants will explore how social and entrainment media impacts the development of healthy relationships.

 

About the trainer:

Colleen Mercuri-Johnson, MSW, LISW-S is the founder of Hope Tree Consulting LLC.  She holds a Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies from the Child Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute.  She provides consultation to teams supporting individuals with complex trauma histories and is a co-lead for the Southwest Regional Trauma-Informed Care Collaborative, an initiative through Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services and Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. An experienced trainer and mental health therapist, Colleen specializes in working with individuals who have experienced complex trauma, as well as individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She speaks on co-occurring mental health and IDD including treatment for problematic sexual behaviors, the impact of trauma and the healing power of connection, sexuality and healthy relationship development across the lifespan.  She is contributing author of the National ARC’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability white paper Sex Offenders with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities: A Call to Action for the Criminal Justice Community.
