Congratulations to Skyelar Hatmaker, November’s Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Month!
Before becoming a DSP, Skyelar worked as a server starting at just 13 years old. She also spent much of her life riding and caring for horses and babysitting in her community. Skyelar’s interest in the DSP field began when a longtime family friend, Lisa Spicer, Director of Operations for Blessed Homecare, shared stories with Skyelar about her work.
“I was always fascinated by what she did,” Skyelar said. “When I turned 18, I was offered a job as a DSP at Blessed Homecare and jumped on the offer!”
Skyelar has been a DSP at Blessed Homecare for nearly 11 months.
Skyelar says one of her favorite things about being a DSP is the relationships she builds with the individuals she supports.
“I see the individuals I serve as my friends, and vice versa,” Skyelar said. “My favorite part is when they come to me for advice or guidance. Having that trust truly means the world.”
Although Skyelar is younger than many of her clients, the mutual respect and connection she shares with them make her role deeply meaningful.
“I truly treasure the memories, laughter, and unexpected adventures that come with my job,” Skyelar said. “My friends never fail to put a smile on my face!”
Skyelar especially loves helping the individuals she serves explore the community, try new activities, and build confidence in spaces where they truly belong.
In addition to being a DSP, Skyelar is also a social work student at Miami University.
“I enjoy being an advocate,” Skyelar said. “This isn’t just a job. I’ve never been upset to ‘go to work.’ Instead, I say, ‘I’m going to hang out with a friend.’ Those I serve have helped me as much as I’ve helped them.”
One powerful example of Skyelar’s impact is her relationship with Tierney, whom she began supporting in April.
At first, according to Skyelar, Tierney was quiet and reserved. As Skyelar continued to engage in conversation with Tierney, she quickly began to feel more comfortable!
“By the second time we hung out, we talked the entire time,” Skyelar said. “We now have a very close bond, and she comes to me whenever she needs advice. I truly love her as a friend.”
Skyelar’s connection with Tierney has helped her grow more confident in advocacy and daily decision-making.
Lynn Goodwin, BCBDD Community Connection Coordinator, said that Skyelar consistently brings a warm, positive presence.
“Skyelar encourages Tierney to share her experiences and accomplishments, fostering a supportive environment where Tierney feels comfortable expressing herself,” Lynn said. “It is clear that Skyelar not only loves her job but has also built a strong and meaningful relationship with Tierney. Her commitment is evident in her consistent efforts to attend BCBDD Speak Up meetings and community events, ensuring Tierney has the opportunity to grow in her advocacy skills. I am excited to see how Tierney continues to flourish, thanks in large part to Skylar’s dedication and support.”
Skyelar’s supervisor, Lisa Spicer, had nothing but praise for Skyelar.
“She is fun, patient, and does her paperwork perfectly,” Lisa said. “She had never done this type of work before and is a true natural. She helps individuals live their best lives and discover new experiences they enjoy. She is definitely a Blessed Homecare ‘blessing.’”
Lisa said even though Skyelar is busy attending college and has a second job, she is always willing to step up when another DSP needs support.
“Skyelar’s reliability and heart-centered approach make her an invaluable member of the team,” Lisa said.
Skyelar said she encourages others to consider the DSP field not just as a career but as a meaningful way to make a difference.
