“Different kinds of minds are the strength of our society:” Celebrating the 2025 Community Recognition Awards

On Saturday, September 20, Berachah Church in Middletown was filled with celebration as Butler County’s Developmental Disability (DD) advocates came together to honor some of their greatest champions. The Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities (BCBDD) 2025 Community Recognition Awards brought together families, providers, volunteers, and self-advocates to shine a light on the often unsung heroes whose work ensures individuals with DD are welcomed, valued, and included.

Continuing a powerful tradition, the 2025 awards recognized individuals and organizations across categories such as the Community Impact Award, Volunteer of the Year, Young Pioneer Award, Community Inclusion Award, Partner of the Year Award, the Community Advocate Award, and the all-new award, Outstanding Educator of the Year. Through moving personal stories and public recognition, BCBDD highlighted the power of advocacy and community partnership in Butler County.

The event was emceed by Tyler Bradshaw, Executive Director of the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields, whose warmth and energy guided the afternoon with the spirit of celebration and community. Bradshaw, known for his leadership in inclusive recreation and youth programs, brought both heart and humor to the stage, connecting personally with attendees and awardees alike.

A major highlight of the afternoon was the event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned author, speaker, and autism advocate. Dr. Grandin captivated the audience with her insights into neurodiversity, inclusion, and the importance of nurturing individual strengths. Her message emphasized the value of practical support, community understanding, and early opportunities for individuals with DD. Attendees were deeply inspired by her personal journey and her call to action: “Different kinds of minds are the strength of our society.”

Dr. Temple Grandin also signed and sold copies of her New York Times best-selling books and her HBO Max movie, Temple Grandin, starring Claire Dance, both before and after the awards ceremony. Her presence created a meaningful and memorable experience for guests, many of whom were thrilled to have their books signed and to pose for photos with her. Dr. Grandin’s warmth and generosity made the event all the more special, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the opportunity to meet her.

Adding a special layer of live coverage and community connection, BCBDD Public Relations Coordinator Cassie Mattia conducted Facebook Live interviews before the event with Superintendent Lee Ann Emmons and each of the major award winners. These real-time interviews allowed families, friends, and community members to celebrate virtually and hear the inspiring voices behind each recognition.

The 2025 Community Recognition Awards were not just an awards ceremony; they were a celebration of connection, compassion, and progress. By shining a spotlight on those working behind the scenes and on the front lines, BCBDD reminded the community that inclusion doesn’t happen by accident; it happens because of people who care deeply and act boldly.
