DSP of the Month – Rian Combs
Congratulations to Rian Combs, BCBDD’s June Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Month!
Rian’s journey to becoming a DSP began after the COVID-19 pandemic changed the course of her career. Previously, she worked as a traveling nail technician, providing manicures and pedicures to seniors who were unable to leave their homes or care facilities. When the pandemic led to the loss of her business and many of her longtime clients, Rian found a new calling while assisting a former client with daily tasks and appointments.
After learning about Ohio’s Independent Provider Program through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, Rian decided to continue doing what she loved most, helping others. With a degree in Social Science and a passion for supporting people in their communities, she became a DSP and has been making a difference ever since.
For the past two years, Rian has served as Stephanie Taylor’s HPC provider. Together, they work toward Stephanie’s goals using creative and engaging strategies. From games and charts to activities connected to Stephanie’s work program, Rian finds fun and meaningful ways to help Stephanie build skills and achieve success.
“Stephanie is very upbeat and friendly,” Rian said. “We have a lot of common interests, and I absolutely love working with her.”
Stephanie describes Rian as “respectful, honest, outgoing, and positive.”
“She helps me go to the store, reach my goals, and improve my mental health,” Stephanie said. “But most of all, she never gives up on me.”
Rian says working in the DD field has strengthened her commitment to advocating for equal access and opportunities for everyone.
“This is such a rewarding field with such sweet individuals,” she said. “I really feel like I make a difference in their lives as much as they do mine. Helping people navigate and live full lives in their homes and communities is such an important aspect of their lives, and I’m proud to be able to help.”
Thank you, Rian, for your dedication, compassion, and unwavering support of the people you serve. Your commitment to helping others live meaningful, fulfilling lives makes a lasting impact every day.
