DSP of the Month – Jelani Galloway (Aug. 2026)
“Being a DSP (Direct Support Professional) is more than a job—it is a commitment to serving others with integrity, compassion, and respect,” says Jelani Galloway, House Coordinator, Parker Residential Care and Services. It’s with that attitude that he applies himself every day and it’s for that reason that Jelani Galloway has been selected as the August DSP of the Month.
Cassie Ring Murray, SSA II at the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities says Jelani has been working with an individual on her caseload and that he embodies the ideal approach to person-centered care. “Jelani is a steady leader and clear communicator, who stepped up to the plate to manage a complex case with many needs,” Cassie said. “Jelani consistently takes care to provide a person-centered, thoughtful approach in his reporting of the individual’s week, and what is important to the individual.”
For his part, Jelani says being a DSP allows him to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals he supports. “I believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion while having opportunities to live as independently as possible,” he said. “As a DSP and a House Coordinator and a Site Supervisor, I have the privilege of helping individuals achieve their personal goals, build confidence, and improve their overall quality of life.”
Patience and flexibility, Jelani says, are incredibly important skills to develop as a DSP. “Every individual has unique needs,” he says. Responding to those needs with a calm, caring demeanor is essential. And that diligence pays off. Jelani says his cup is filled every time he sees someone learn a new skill, gain some level of independence, or even just in seeing a smile after someone overcomes a difficulty. “Those moments,” he says, “remind me why this work is so meaningful.”
To Jelani, DSP work is more than just a job, it’s a vocation. “It is an honor to be part of their journey and to help create an environment where they feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential,” he said. “I am thankful and appreciative for this experience.”
